In our first episode, we look at films Valley of the Dolls (1967), Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), and seminal manga Helter Skelter (original run July 1995 – April 1996, released in English by Vertical in 2013) by Kyoko Okazaki. We discuss where themes in these works intersect, the limits and dangers of fame, body horror, and why Anne Welles is indeed the Loser of the Week. Edited by Sean Witzke.

  • 00:00 - 30:00 - Katie and Sarah discuss Valley of the Dolls (1967), directed by Mark Robson, starring: Patty Duke, Sharon Tate, Barbara Perkins, Susan Hayward, Tony Scotti, Paul Burke, Lee Grant, Martin Milner, and Alexander Davion.

There is an excerpt from the film’s soundtrack here.  The film’s soundtrack was written largely by Stu Phillips (The Monkees), and the vocals for the film’s soundtrack are from the singer Lynn Carey.

  • 41:00 - END - Kyoko Okazaki’s comic Helter Skelter is discussed.  Helter Skelter has recently been released into the American market through the publisher Vertical and is available wherever fine comics are sold.

This segment includes a cover of the Beatles song “Helter Skelter” performed by Siouxsie and the Banshees.

The excerpt about the Manson family is from a 1969 NBC News Broadcast, which is also used in a recent MSNBC documentary called Will You Kill For Me (2008).
